  • What Is The Thoughtful Classroom?

Any teacher who graduated from a teacher preparation program is aware of Howard Gardner’s theories surrounding multiple intelligences.  Additionally, most teachers have some knowledge of theories surrounding learning styles (such as those by David Kolb).  Over the last several decades, researchers and educators have used these theories as a foundation or “starting point” in order to research and develop practical strategies that teachers can use in their classrooms on a daily basis.  THAT is what The Thoughtful Classroom is.  Based on decades of work by Harvey Silver and Richard Strong, The Thoughtful Classroom combines thirty-five years of research and more than thirty years of practice to form one comprehensive professional development program.

In September 2009 I will begin my fourth year using the research and strategies of The Thoughtful Classroom.  I will also facilitate a learning club of other secondary teachers who range from Thoughtful Classroom rookies to teachers starting their second and third years with the program.  It is my hope to use this space to reflect on all aspects of The Thoughtful Classroom program in the coming year, including what works well…what gives me difficulties…ideas for future use…and so on.  I invite my colleagues – both here at Bolivar-Richburg Central School and other teachers using Thoughtful Classroom strategies – to join me in this dialogue in an effort to improve the craft of teaching.  Come join the conversation!
